In Loving Memory of Sydney Blanton
|
At the moment that I would open the door to pick her up, the sound of her voice, the look on her face, running, with arms wide open, was something that I will never forget. Without fail this was the way she greeted me and her dad no matter where she was. Her kisses would melt your heart, and her laugh will always be with me. She is my little sunshine and will warm my heart until the day that she is in my arms again.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Blanton family fund c/o Rose City Federal Credit Union, P.O. Box 2741, Thomasville, GA, 31799. The contributions will be used by the Blanton family, the Iowa City Ronald McDonald House, Ponseti International Foundation, and to Angel Flight.

Toddler aboard charity flight dies in
Iowa crash
By MELANIE S. WELTE – 2 days ago
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A small
plane crash in Iowa City claimed the
life of a Georgia toddler who was being
flown home after medical treatment for
clubfoot.
Two-year-old Sydney Blanton, of
Thomasville, Ga., was aboard the flight
arranged by Angel Flight Central Inc.,
an organization that provides free
travel for individuals in need of health
care. Her grandfather, Alan Harden,
also of Thomasville, confirmed
Wednesday that she died from injuries
she sustained in the crash.
Blanton was in Iowa City to be treated
for clubfoot, a condition in which the
foot is turned in sharply so that a
person seems to be walking on an
ankle.

IOWA CITY - Sydney Blanton was a
happy-go-lucky toddler who loved to
swim in her grandma's backyard pool
and play with her brothers, Hunter and
Tyler, family and friends said
Wednesday.
The day after a plane crash killed
Sydney and injured her mother and
the plane's pilot, friends and family in
the Blantons' hometown of
Thomasville, Ga., set up a fund for the
family and grieved the death of the
little girl whose grandfather called her
a "bundle of joy." Sydney would have
turned 3 on July 18.

Dr. Ignacio Ponseti, the UI physician
who developed a non-surgical method
for treating clubfoot, was treating
Sydney. He was told about her death
Tuesday after a party for his 94th
birthday. The emeritus professor of
orthopedic surgery still sees patients.
"It's a tragedy," he said Wednesday. "It
was hard for me to go to sleep. It
hurts."
Ponseti said he had previously treated
Sydney with the method, which uses
casts and gentle manipulation of the
feet. She had returned to the UI after a
mild relapse, but she was completely
corrected after the last treatment and
was walking normally, he said.
A visiting German doctor studying the
method videotaped her walking the
halls. Ponseti gave Sydney's mother a
copy when he visited her in the
hospital after the crash.
"We cried together," he said.
Ponseti's following is international, and
the Angel Flights are often used to
bring patients to Iowa. He said the
accident was the first involving the
flights that he knows of.
"These are wonderful people and very
good pilots," he said.
“ ... We cannot express our anguish at
losing her. Our patients are part of a
worldwide family, and there has been a
tremendous outpouring of grief and
loss from other families affected by
clubfeet. As people devoted to healing,
this tragedy strikes us particularly
hard. Our thoughts and prayers are
with Sydney’s family as well as the
pilot, who was so selfless in bringing
Sydney to us,” the statement
continued.

And in the nearly 25 years of volunteer
flights, officials say to their knowledge,
no one has died in a crash, until now.
On Tuesday officials say veteran pilot
Lewis Martin was on his 67th mission
with Angel Flight Central, when his
plane went down in the outskirts of
Iowa City.
The patient on board, a two year old
(Sydney Blanton) girl from
Thomasville, died from the injuries she
sustained in the crash.

The clubfoot community mourns the loss of little Sydney Blanton. We extend our deepest
sympathy to Sydney's mother, father, friends, family, the Angel Flight association, the
Ponseti Clinic where she was treated for her clubfoot, and each other as we all try to come to
grips with the sudden tragedy that took her young life.
